History of Coquitlam
Coquitlam, British Columbia is a city that is located in the Lower Mainland region of the province. It is about 30 kilometers east of Downtown Vancouver. The city was incorporated on July 6, 1891.

The first Europeans to visit the area were James William Douglas and his party of fur traders in 1827. They were looking for a route between the Fraser Canyon and Harrison Lake. In 1860, John Cambie negotiated a land purchase from the Coast Salish people, and established the first trading post in what would become Coquitlam.
In 1868, William Charles Barker moved to the area and founded a sawmill on the south bank of Stave Lake. The settlement that grew up around the sawmill was called Barkerville. When the Canadian Pacific Railway was built through the area in 1882, it bypassed Barkerville and went further north, so the settlement declined.
