Terpenes are aromatic compounds found in cannabis and most plants. They create a strain’s smell and flavour, and are widely considered a better predictor of how a strain will feel than the indica\/sativa label. The six that matter most are myrcene, limonene, caryophyllene, pinene, linalool and terpinolene.<\/strong><\/p>\n

What terpenes are<\/h2>\n

Terpenes are volatile aromatic molecules produced in the same trichomes that produce cannabinoids. They’re not unique to cannabis \u2014 limonene is what makes citrus peel smell like citrus, pinene is the smell of pine forest, and linalool is the lavender note in essential oils.<\/p>\n

In cannabis, terpenes do the work that strain names get the credit for. Two plants both labelled “indica” can have completely different terpene profiles and feel entirely different as a result.<\/p>\n

Caryophyllene is the unusual one<\/h2>\n

Most terpenes influence the experience indirectly \u2014 through aroma, and possibly by modulating how cannabinoids behave. Caryophyllene is different: it binds directly to CB2 receptors in the endocannabinoid system, which technically makes it a dietary cannabinoid as well as a terpene. It’s the only terpene known to do this, and it’s part of why peppery strains often feel distinctly body-centred.<\/p>\n

The entourage effect<\/h2>\n

The entourage effect is the theory that cannabinoids and terpenes work together, producing an outcome different from any isolated compound. It explains a common observation: full-spectrum products often feel richer and more nuanced than pure distillate at the same THC level.<\/p>\n

Being straightforward about the evidence \u2014 the entourage effect is widely accepted among growers and consumers, and supported by preliminary research, but it is not fully proven at the clinical level. Treat it as a well-supported working theory rather than settled science.<\/p>\n
