Northern Lights

Northern Lights — the pure indica that built the modern Kush family

Northern Lights is a legendary pure indica known for sweet, earthy-piney aromas and fast, deeply relaxing full-body effects. One of the most influential strains ever bred and a multiple Cannabis Cup winner. Available for same-day livraison across Toronto and the GTA from Tropic Exotic.

Genetics and history

Northern Lights is an almost pure indica descended from Afghani landrace genetics, with some accounts adding a Thai sativa influence. It originated in the US Pacific Northwest in the 1980s and was refined in the Netherlands by Sensi Seeds. It won Cannabis Cups in 1988, 1989 and 1990.

Why it matters

Northern Lights sits at the base of the family tree for an enormous number of strains — Super Silver Haze, Shiva Skunk, Sensi Star and countless Kush hybrids carry its genetics. Its stability, speed of flowering and resin production made it one of the most-used breeding parents in history.

Apparence

Compact, dense, resinous buds in deep green with purple hues in cooler grows, and a thick trichome coat.

Aroma and flavour

Sweet and earthy with pronounced pine and a light spicy-herbal quality. Clean and classic rather than loud — a landrace-style profile without the candy sweetness of modern strains.

Effects

Fast and physical. Relaxation arrives quickly and spreads through the body, accompanied by a dreamy, pleasantly euphoric mental state. It is a benchmark souche for evening use, muscle tension, pain and insomnia.

Despite its potency, Northern Lights is often described as smooth and manageable rather than overwhelming, which is part of why it endured.

Terpene profile

Typically myrcene-dominant with caryophyllene and pinene.
