The main types

Solvent vs solventless

Solvent-based extraction uses butane, propane or CO2 to strip cannabinoids from plant material, then purges the solvent. Done properly it is safe and efficient, and it produces shatter, live resin and distillate. Solventless methods use only ice water, heat and pressure — producing bubble hash and rosin. Solventless products command a premium for their purity.

How to use concentrates safely

Start extremely small. Concentrates can be four to five times stronger than flower. A dab the size of a grain of rice is a reasonable first dose. Wait several minutes before considering more.

• Dab rig or e-rig — the standard. Around 500-550°F preserves flavour; higher temperatures burn terpenes.
• Concentrate vaporizer — portable and temperature-controlled.
• Added to flower — a small amount on a bowl or in a joint, and the gentlest introduction.
