Kief is the fine powder of trichomes — the resin glands that carry cannabis’s cannabinoids and terpenes — separated from the plant material. It collects in the bottom chamber of a three-piece grinder and is considerably more potent than the flower it came from, because it is almost entirely resin with very little plant matter.
Where kief comes from
Trichomes are the tiny, mushroom-shaped glands that coat cannabis flower and give it its frosted look. They are where the plant produces THCA, CBD and the terpenes responsible for aroma. They are also fragile — which is why they break off when flower is handled, ground or agitated.
Kief is simply those broken-off glands, collected. It is the oldest and simplest cannabis concentrate, and the raw material for traditional hash.
How potent is it?
Meaningfully stronger than flower — typically two to three times, though it varies with how clean the separation is. Kief that contains a lot of fine plant material is weaker and harsher; kief that is almost pure trichome heads is stronger and burns paler.
Colour is a rough quality signal. Pale blond kief indicates mostly trichome heads. Greener kief means more plant matter came through the screen.
How to collect it
The simplest method is a three-chamber grinder with a mesh screen. Kief falls through into the bottom chamber as you grind. A few things speed it up:
- Give the grinder a few extra turns after the flower is broken up.
- Tap the sides — a coin placed in the grinding chamber (a “kief coin”) knocks more loose, though it can add metal shavings over time, so many people skip it.
- Chilling the grinder briefly makes trichomes more brittle and easier to separate.
For larger quantities, a dry-sift screen box or ice-water extraction produces cleaner results — the latter is how bubble hash is made.
Ways to use it
- On top of a bowl. The most common method. Sprinkle a little over packed flower. Do not fill the bowl with kief alone — it burns fast and can clog.
- In a joint. Mix it through the flower rather than layering it, or the joint burns unevenly.
- Twaxing. Roll a lightly moistened joint in kief for a coated exterior.
- Pressed into hash. Heat and pressure turn kief into traditional hash — see below.
- In edibles. Kief must be decarboxylated first, exactly like flower, or most of the THCA never converts.
- In a vaporizer. Many dry-herb vaporizers handle kief with a concentrate pad or degummed screen.
Pressing kief into hash
Heat and pressure fuse the trichomes into a solid. The simplest home method: wrap kief tightly in parchment, apply firm even pressure, and add gentle warmth. A hand press or even a rolling pin works. Pressed hash burns slower and more evenly than loose kief, and the flavour changes noticeably — deeper and more resinous.
Rosin takes this further, using higher heat and pressure to squeeze the resin out entirely, producing a solventless concentrate.
Practical notes
- Start small. Kief is stronger than flower — a light sprinkle is plenty.
- Store it airtight, cool and dark. Terpenes evaporate from kief faster than from intact flower because the glands are already broken open.
- Do not compact it in the grinder for months. It degrades. Collect and store it properly.
If you like kief, you will likely also like hash and concentrates, which follow the same principle of separating resin from plant material.
Frequently asked questions
What is kief?
The loose powder of trichomes — the plant’s resin glands — separated from cannabis flower.
Is kief stronger than flower?
Yes, typically two to three times stronger, depending on how cleanly it was separated.
What is the difference between kief and hash?
Hash is kief that has been pressed, usually with heat, into a solid.
How do I collect kief?
Use a three-chamber grinder with a mesh screen; it collects in the bottom chamber as you grind.
Can you smoke kief on its own?
You can, but it burns very fast and can clog a bowl. It works better sprinkled over flower.
Why is my kief green instead of blond?
Green means more plant material passed through the screen. Blond kief is mostly trichome heads and is cleaner and stronger.
Do I need to decarb kief for edibles?
Yes — like flower, it needs heating first or the THCA will not convert to THC.
