THC Percentage and AAAA Grading Explained: How to Read a Cannabis Menu

THC percentage measures potency only — typically 15–20% for moderate flower, 20–25% for strong, and 25%+ for very strong. The Canadian AAAA-to-A scale grades appearance, cure and trim, not chemistry. Neither number tells you how a souche will feel; terpene content does. Most experienced buyers find AAA at 18–22% THC is the value sweet spot.

What THC percentage actually measures

THC percentage is the proportion of the flower’s dry weight made up of tetrahydrocannabinol. A gram of 20% THC flower contains roughly 200mg of THC. That is the whole of what the number tells you.

What it does not tell you: how smooth the smoke is, how it will taste, whether the effect is energizing or sedating, or whether the flower was grown and cured well. Those come from terpenes, genetics and post-harvest handling.

Why higher THC is not automatically better

This is the most persistent myth in cannabis retail, and it is worth stating plainly: chasing the highest THC number on a menu is a poor buying strategy.

Three reasons:

1. Diminishing returns. Cannabinoid receptors saturate. The perceived difference between 20% and 28% is far smaller than the numbers suggest — often the extra simply produces more grogginess rather than more enjoyment.
2. Terpenes drive the character. A 17% strain rich in limonene and pinene can feel brighter, cleaner and more enjoyable than a bland 28% one. Blind preference tests consistently show people rate flower by aroma and smoothness, not by lab number.
3. Testing variance is real. Results vary between labs and between samples from the same batch. Treat a printed percentage as an approximation with a few points of margin, not a precise measurement.

The Canadian AAAA to A grading scale

This is an informal industry convention rather than a regulated standard, so it varies slightly by retailer. Broadly:

What grading actually measures: bud density, trichome coverage, trim quality, aroma intensity, cure, and absence of stems, seeds and leaf. It is largely a visual and sensory assessment — which is why grade and THC percentage do not always move together.

How to actually evaluate flower

Smell it first

Aroma is the single best quality indicator available to a buyer. Strong smell means intact terpenes, which means proper drying, curing and storage. Flower with almost no smell has been overdried, badly cured, or sat too long.

Check the texture

Properly cured flower compresses slightly and springs back. If it crumbles to dust it is overdried — harsh smoke, faded flavour. If it feels damp or spongy, moisture content is too high and mould risk is real.

Look at the trichomes

The frosty coating is where cannabinoids and terpenes live. Heavy, even coverage is a good sign. Under magnification, milky-white trichomes indicate peak harvest timing; clear ones suggest an early harvest, amber ones a later, more sedating harvest.

Assess the trim

Hand-trimmed flower retains more trichomes than machine-trimmed. Excess leaf burns harsher and indicates rushed processing.

Where the value actually sits

For most buyers, AAA flower in the 18–22% range is the sweet spot: noticeably better than AA in aroma and smoothness, meaningfully cheaper than AAAA, and potent enough for the overwhelming majority of consumers.

AA becomes the smarter buy in two situations: buying in bulk where per-gram cost dominates, and buying for edibles or extraction where appearance is irrelevant because the flower is being processed anyway.

AAAA earns its premium if you care about flavour, smoothness and presentation — but you are paying substantially more for a difference that narrows considerably once the flower is ground.

Other numbers on a menu

• CBD % — non-intoxicating; can soften THC’s intensity. Anything above about 1% is worth noting.
• Total cannabinoids — includes THCA, CBGA and minor cannabinoids. Usually a slightly higher number than THC alone.
• THCA vs THC — raw flower contains THCA, which converts to active THC when heated. Labels showing “Total THC” have already accounted for this conversion.
• Terpene % — rarely listed, but if you see it, 2%+ is excellent and a far better quality signal than THC.
